Mount Merapi on the Indonesian island of Java has erupted. He is considered the most active in the country. A hot ash plume escaped from the crater for two minutes around noon Saturday (local time), the center of volcanology said. In Turgo, a village just five kilometers from the volcano, some residents had moved to safety, according to civil protection. There is no evacuation order yet.
The more than 2900 meters high Merapi is a so-called stratovolcano. When an eruption occurs, a dangerous mixture of dust, rock, lava and hot gas often rushes down the slopes. The mountain is located about 35 kilometers north of the city of Yogyakarta.
A major eruption in 2010 killed more than 340 people and displaced tens of thousands. Since the end of 2020, an increased alarm level has been in effect again. There are nearly 130 active volcanoes in all of Indonesia. The island nation is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic tremors. (saw/sda/dpa)
