Russia suffered heavy losses on Tuesday. Ukraine attacked the aggressor with one of the largest drone and missile attacks since Moscow started the war between the two neighbors more than two years ago. The Ukrainian army destroyed a major oil refinery in the attacks. Images on social media show violent explosions and flames. Swarms of drones also destroyed critical infrastructure in major cities such as St. Petersburg and Voronezh.
In addition, Russian rebels fighting alongside Ukraine have apparently entered the Russian border areas of Belgorod and Kursk. The Putin rebels of the ‘Russian Freedom Legion’ published a video on Telegram saying that they would ‘go to the Russian presidential elections’. It is also said that a video shows the moment when the Ukrainian supporters crossed the Russian-Ukrainian border.
Have the rebels captured small villages?
According to media reports, they captured the small village of Lozovaya Rudka in the Belgorod region, where there apparently was little resistance from Russia’s domestic secret service and border guard FSB. The rebels also announced a new conquest near Kursk that evening. The Russian army contradicted this: it was able to repel the advance during the night and inflicted heavy losses on the attackers. The Russian Ministry of Defense published drone footage intended to show defenses against “Ukrainian sabotage groups” in the affected regions.
In five days, presidential elections will take place in Russia. The latest fighting in the Russian border area and attacks on major cities are likely to worry the incumbent government. The Russian army responded on Tuesday evening with a heavy drone attack on the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih. A residential building was attacked in the birthplace of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. At least three people were killed. Dozens were injured. (An)
