He had been talking about it privately for days, and now former US President Donald Trump (77) confirmed it publicly: he announced who he chose to succeed Ronna McDaniel (50) as chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC). The RNC is the primary Republican organization and oversees all activities within the party. If the American president has his way, a dual leadership consisting of Republican leader Michael Whatley (54) from North Carolina and his daughter-in-law Lara Trump (41) will lead the party.
“The RNC must be a good partner in the presidential elections,” Trump wrote in a statement published by the New York Times. “She must do the job we expect from the national party, and do it flawlessly. That means we must help ensure fair and transparent elections across the country.”
Father-in-law Trump praised the former TV host effusively in the statement. “Lara is an extremely talented communicator,” Trump said of his son’s wife Eric (40). “She told me she wanted to take on this challenge.”
That is what Trump wants to achieve with the change of power of the RNC
With Lara Trump and Michael Whatley, two fervent Trump supporters would take important leadership positions within the Republicans and thus consolidate Trump’s control over the party apparatus. Trump’s campaign plans to merge the RNC with his campaign as much as possible. There should be as little distance as possible between Trump’s campaign and the RNC.
Lara Trump had considered running for the US Senate in her home state of North Carolina in 2021. Ultimately, however, she decided not to run for office.
Trumps vs. Haley
Whatley supports Trump’s false claims about alleged voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. Whatley had already applied for the co-chairmanship in 2023, but failed despite Trump’s support.
But Trump can’t just name his two favorites. McDaniel is currently considering resigning shortly after the South Carolina primary on February 24, after which new elections for chairman would take place.
Trump’s only remaining competitor in the battle for the 2024 presidential candidacy is Nikki Haley (52). The former UN ambassador is well behind Trump in the polls. McDaniel, who remained neutral until Trump won the New Hampshire primary, is now calling for Republicans to side with Trump.
