Stan Wawrinka (ATP 60) celebrates his first victory this year at the clay tournament in Buenos Aires (Arg). The Vaudois defeated local Pedro Cachin (ATP 74) 6:7 (4:7), 6:1, 6:2 in the first round.
Wawrinka shows a mature performance against the Argentinian, who won the tournament in Gstaad last year but is still without a victory after five matches in 2024, having lost the opening set. He doesn’t even have to give up his serve. «After the first set I was able to get back into my game. “I was more aggressive and also more flexible,” says the 38-year-old cheerfully into the ATP microphone.
Now a Chilean is waiting
In the eighth finals, the three-time Grand Slam winner will face the Chilean Nicolas Jarry, winner of the Geneva Open. Wawrinka hopes to win two matches in a row for the first time since the US Open in September. He won his only match so far against the current number 21 in the world in January 2019 in Doha.
Jarry, who like Wawrinka was knocked out of the Australian Open at the first opportunity, enjoyed a first-round bye in Buenos Aires due to his status as the No. 3 seed. (SDA)
