Prince Harry has settled the remaining parts of his lawsuit against the publisher of the British newspaper ‘Daily Mirror’ for phone hacking by paying a large sum.
Both parties had agreed outside court that Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) would initially make an interim payment of 400,000 pounds (about 441,000 francs), Harry’s lawyer David Sherborne said at the High Court in London on Friday. The youngest son of King Charles III. did not participate in the hearing. The 39-year-old was recently in London briefly on Tuesday and Wednesday to visit his father, who was suffering from cancer.
Partial victory for Harry in December
The court had already awarded Harry £140,600 in damages in the case in December. At that time, there were 33 articles from the publisher’s newspapers, 15 of which, according to the court, were the result of illegal information gathering. Between 1996 and 2011, journalists from the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People obtained information about Harry’s private life by listening to telephone messages and marketing them as headlines. Another 115 reports were still pending. In these cases, once the agreement has been reached, no further litigation will take place. MGN said it was pleased with the agreement.
More procedures probably
Harry is involved in other lawsuits. These include lawsuits against the publishers Associated Newspapers Limited (“Daily Mail”, “Mail on Sunday”) and News Group Newspapers (“The Sun”), which published the tabloid “News Of The World”, which was closed years ago discontinued. This also concerns illegal information gathering. In proceedings against the British Home Office, Harry also wants to ensure that he and his family receive full police protection, despite leaving the inner circle of the British royal family.
