On October 1, Dorothy Hoffner, a 104-year-old senior from Chicago, Illinois, set a world record. She became the oldest person to skydive. The video went viral on social media. Here’s the story:
At 104 years old: This American retiree is the oldest skydiver in the world
Now – exactly a week later – Hoffner is dead, apparently she died in her sleep on Sunday evening, October 8 (local time). The cause of death is still unclear. Employees at the Brookdale Lake View retirement home in Chicago found her lifeless in her bed Monday morning, Joe Conant told the New York Times. He had met Hoffner as a nurse and was a longtime friend and companion. Thanks to him, Hoffner made her first skydive four years ago. She was then a hundred years old. He also guided the senior in her record jump on October 1.
Guinness should recognize the record posthumously
According to his own statements, Conant now wants to arrange the paperwork so that his girlfriend can be posthumously confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest female skydiver in the world. However, that may take some time. The current record holder is the Swede Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson, who dived into the depths with a tandem jump in May 2022 at the age of 103.
Happy until the end
Hoffner remained quick-witted until the end and radiated great energy, Conant said. She was also quick-witted as she answered questions from numerous reporters immediately after her skydive. “Age is just a number,” she said at the time. And that she would like to take a hot air balloon ride afterwards. “She was tireless. She kept going,” said Conant, who she affectionately called “grandson” even though the two were not related. Hoffner remained childless all her life. Now, just a few weeks before her 105th birthday, which would have been in December, she has passed away. (lso)
