The tragedy in Italy shocked the whole of Europe. It is not yet clear why the bus carrying 39 people fell from a bridge in Mestre near Venice, killing 21 people. The grief of the relatives is enormous.
According to reports in the Italian media, bus driver Alberto R.* was from Treviso. His lifeless body was the last to be recovered from the vehicle. The Prefect of Venice, Michele Di Bari, said this in an interview about the “TG1” program.
“Shuttle to Venice” like the last Facebook post
R. was considered very experienced. Both his company and the people in his village cannot imagine how the accident could have happened.
A friend of the Italian wrote in an emotional Facebook post: “I don’t want to believe it. Alberto, you were always so proud of your work. I wrote to you as soon as it happened, hoping that the damn feeling I had wasn’t true. Bye Alby, fly.”
The driver wrote “Shuttle to Venice” in his last Facebook post – at 6:30 p.m., an hour and a half before the tragedy. This includes numerous concerned comments from friends who heard about the accident.
Many young victims
Meanwhile, there is speculation about the cause of the accident: “Perhaps a medical problem with the driver led to the accident,” said Renato Boraso, Venice’s mobility official. He categorically rules out that there was already a fire on board before the crash. The flames only started after the impact. Boraso hopes that surveillance camera footage can help clarify the accident.
Ukrainian, German, French and Croatian tourists are also said to have been on the bus. Three children are also believed to be among the dead: a baby, a 12-year-old child and a teenager.
A newborn baby miraculously survived. According to media reports, his parents threw themselves protectively over their child to protect him from the flames.
Two little brothers are now orphaned
Two German brothers (7 and 13) were seriously injured in the accident and taken to hospital. They lost both parents in the accident. A total of 7 of the 21 fatalities have already been identified by name.
On Tuesday evening, a bus from the private company Lalinea fell from a viaduct in Mestre near Venice. 21 people were killed at the scene of the accident. Fifteen people were also injured, some seriously. (An)
