Which party is most requested in Swiss Google searches?

The federal elections are just around the corner on October 22, and what could be more obvious than Googling the parties and candidates? A tool published by Google itself now reveals which party Mr and Mrs Schweizer most wanted to know last week. This was specially made for the elections.

According to this, the SVP is the most in demand. Last week, about 45 percent of all searches related to the right-wing party. The SP came in second place with 13 percent of the searches.

The Swiss were least keen to get information about the Greens, the EPP and the EDU via Google.

The SVP song caused a stir online

The SVP election song “Das isch d’SVP” apparently caused many interested people to search for the party online. Shortly after the song was released in August, SVP searches soared, as the tool shows. A week later, the surveys leveled off again.

Google also provides insight into which political topics were searched for particularly often. These are not surprising in the past twelve months, Ukraine, wages and rent. French-speaking Switzerland was mainly interested in the issue of wages, while cantons such as Glarus and St. Gallen were more interested in the issue of rents.

Even though the SVP’s top position on Google corresponds to the latest election barometer, the search volume generated is more of a gimmick and obviously not an indicator of impending election success. (she)
