Pope Francis (86) has accepted the resignation of Vaduz Archbishop Wolfgang Haas (75). At the beginning of August, Haas turned 75 years old. Therefore, according to canon law, he had to tender his resignation to the Pope. Francis accepted this and decided that the Archdiocese of Vaduz would have an apostolic administrator in the form of Bishop Benno Elbs (62). Elbs is Bishop of Feldkirch (Austria).
Haas was Bishop of Chur from 1990 to 1997 and Archbishop of Vaduz since 1997. He also became the center of the abuse scandal that became public through an investigation by the University of Zurich.
The University of Zurich makes the following accusation: “In training and selecting priests, he imposed his own criteria without thinking. These consisted of ordaining as many conservative young priests as possible, including those considered unfit for the priesthood by those responsible for priestly formation. SonntagsBlick’s investigation revealed that Haas also employed an abuser in the Chur diocese, although there were major concerns. (bab)
