The traffic jam on the Gotthard is not only annoying for motorists. Politicians are also looking for solutions to reduce traffic jams.

Anyone who wants to go south by car will have to pay for it in the future. That was the idea anyway. SVP President Marco Chiesa (48) called for tolls on the Alpine highways – with compensation for Swiss.

Chiesa had submitted a proposal proposing an “alpine highway toll.” This transit fee should apply to cars that want to drive through large tunnels on the Alpine highways.

Rösti wants to file a report

The highlight was: “The tolls in the Alps through these tunnels should not be discriminatory, but should provide cost compensation for Swiss registered vehicles.” This means that all users must pay the fee, but Swiss drivers must receive compensation, i.e. some kind of refund.

Only: the Council of States did not listen to the SVP proposal. He rejected the motion by 8 yes to 15 no with 13 abstentions.

The Federal Council also recommended rejecting the motion. The responsible federal councilor Albert Rösti (56) said in the council that he is currently investigating measures to defuse the situation on the Gotthard. He wants to present this in a report next year. (she)
