In the Greek region of Thessaly, individual villages can no longer be reached. Residents are now sending SOS signals.

Storms and heavy rains have flooded other places in Central Greece. The city and municipality of Karditsa and surrounding communities are particularly affected. In many places the water reached the roofs of the houses, forcing residents to climb onto the roofs to save themselves. “The water is up to four meters high in some places,” says a resident of broadcaster Mega.

“The flat land of Thessaly is a huge lake,” firefighter spokesman Giannis Artopoios told ERTnews. Meanwhile, the army also uses inflatable boats. About 700,000 people live in the entire region of Thessaly. According to Greek media, almost all of them have been affected by the flood.

“There is no country!”

The inhabitants of Karditsa reported in the Greek media that their village was inaccessible, that the whole plain was under water and that rescuers could not come. ‘Maybe with helicopters, but where will they land? There is no land!” said a man.

In Central Greece it rained and thundered for the fourth day in a row on Thursday. Above all, the great lowlands in the region of Thessaly, the “breadbasket of Greece,” are under water. The infrastructure has been badly affected and in large parts of the region there is no electricity or water.

Hundreds of people had to spend the night at the airport

Due to the severe storms in Central Greece, hundreds of people spent Wednesday night on the Superstar ferry in the sea off the port city of Volos. On Wednesday morning, the Seajets ship was still a few nautical miles from the port, as can be seen on the Marinetraffic ship platform. According to media reports, the port police of Volos had forbidden the ferry from docking because the port was previously flooded and the traffic situation in the city is so difficult. The ship apparently could not dock until the afternoon, as Marinetraffic shows.

The airport on the Sporades island of Skiathos was also badly hit, according to airport spokesman Savvas Karagiannis, several hundred people also had to spend the night there. He could not say when the airport will fully resume operations. “Unbelievable amounts of water have come down, the access roads have been closed.” The people would be provided with food and water.
