Cristiano Ronaldo has not been nominated for the Ballon d’Or for the first time since 2004.

The French trade magazine ‘France Football’ has announced the list of nominees for the Ballon d’Or 2023. The list also includes the name of record winner Lionel Messi (36), but not that of his permanent rival Cristiano Ronaldo (38).

The Portuguese, who moved to Saudi Arabia in the winter, has not been nominated in the elections for the first time since 2004. Ronaldo has won the award five times.

Messi, who has been scoring goals for Inter Miami since this summer, is regarded as the favorite for the coveted trophy after winning the World Cup with Argentina last December – it would be his eighth. The toughest competitor is probably three-time winner and super striker Erling Haaland (23) from Manchester City.

The Frenchman Kylian Mbappé (24) and last year’s winner Karim Benzema (35) can also hope to win the Ballon d’Or, which was first awarded in 1956. The award ceremony will take place on October 30 in Paris. (SDA/bjl)
