Bolivia is rocked by a sports scandal. As announced by the Federación Boliviana de Fútbol (FBF), matches in the country’s first and second leagues are temporarily suspended. The reason for this is the suspicion of match fixing.
Referees, players and club officials are said to be involved in the scandal, and there is talk of a whole “network of corruption”. Three senior referees have already been fired.
Blitz tournament as a replacement?
The termination of the championship was decided at a meeting of representatives of the association and those responsible for the clubs. 14 of the 17 teams voted for the decision. 2 voted against, 1 club abstained.
The FBF has filed suit over the allegations. In addition, the association has now asked the South American umbrella organization Conmebol to organize a blitz tournament no later than the end of December 2023 in order to determine the champion. (byl)
