Musk establishes AI company and wants to compete with ChatGPT

Tech billionaire Elon Musk wants to join the current hype around artificial intelligence (AI). The Twitter owner and boss of electric car maker Tesla has formed a company in Nevada called X.AI.

This is according to a company database of the US state. Musk and his chief of staff Jared Birchall have been named as responsible.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday evening about the company, which was already registered on March 9. In recent days, there has been increasing evidence that Musk is more active in the field of artificial intelligence. The Financial Times reported on Friday that he had already found investors for a new AI company.

The website “Business Insider” wrote that he bought thousands of graphics cards from the supplier Nvidia. The technology is often used for artificial intelligence-based applications. Musk downplayed that in a recent interview: Everyone was buying a lot of graphics cards.

Musk co-signed the letter

At the same time, Musk has publicly warned of the risks of artificial intelligence software and was a prominent signatory to an open letter in late March proposing a six-month development break for the technology.

The text engine ChatGPT, Google’s competitor software Bard and programs that can generate images from text descriptions are currently causing a stir. At the same time, there are concerns that their skills could be used, for example, to produce and spread misinformation.

ChatGPT formulates the texts by estimating the probable continuation of a sentence word for word. A consequence of the procedure is that in addition to correct information, completely incorrect information is also made up – but no difference is recognizable to the user.

Musk was one of the founders of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, but left over four years ago and is now a critic of the start-up. Musk has had a humanoid robot developed at Tesla for years, which he believes could eventually become more important than the car business.
