This car has been in camouflage since the first generation. Whoever says Kangoo means Renault’s smallest carrier. Dear greengrocer and paint pots for the tour of the wholesale market, and painters for the stairs – thanks to the skylight, through which the ladder can practically go out. But it still continues to show its true strength among relatives and relatives: as an inexpensive alternative to the family van with its practical sliding doors, XL trunk, numerous shelves and ample headroom. As the pickup segment is booming in the SUV boom, families of five who need more space for their luggage are more likely to use high-roof station wagons.
Like sister models Mercedes EQT and Nissan Townstar with a slightly modified design, Kangoo is perfect for electric driving. After all, top speed or luxury equipment does not play any role in the harsh everyday family life. The manageable 285 kilometer range between the school, the football field and the supermarket does not limit anyone.
Two-wheelbase Stromer
The 122 hp (90 kW) electric motor on the front axle is therefore fully sufficient in the 4.49-metre-long Renault Kangoo E-Tech Electric. For greater range, only 75 hp remains in eco mode and the top speed is limited to 110 km/h. But even that is enough to drive many people away when the traffic light starts. Unlike the normal Kangoo with combustion engine, you can feel the 1.8-tonne higher weight, tight damping on the front axle and very smooth steering.
The cockpit has virtual instruments, as well as a central touchscreen for navigation and infotainment; smartphone can be installed next to the steering wheel. The available space is also quite good in the version originally available with a normal wheelbase. The XL variant, which is 25 centimeters longer, will arrive at the end of the year. Unfortunately, the lithium-ion battery takes up space in the lower body, forcing adults to sit in the second row with their legs bent; But it should not disturb children up to 1.50 meters. The rear seat can be folded or moved up to 14 centimeters long.
Slow loading, great price
With a usable battery capacity of 44 kilowatt-hours (kWh), you can travel approximately 300 kilometers as long as it’s not too cold. This range is reasonable, but the maximum charge capacity of only 80 kilowatts (kW) seems a bit outdated. About 170 kilometers of electricity can be recharged in 30 minutes – long distances can take significantly longer. A stand-alone 11 kW charger is also standard. Additional charges apply for 22 kW and 80 kW. After all, the power connector is in front of the grill, within easy reach behind the brand seal.
The Renault Kangoo E-Tech Electric can really score when it comes to price: the area-per-franc ratio should not be better for any other electric car right now. The base model starts at 39,500 francs; It’s just 1500 francs thinner, with a choice of 22 and 80 kW charging power. Families don’t come much cheaper than electricity.
