Besides the long-standing champion YB, FC Luzern is the only team for which a round before the end has nothing to do. The Lucerne are tied in the conference league qualification.
“We have rewarded ourselves for an incredible season. From the Barrage straight to Europe. There isn’t much to complain about. Especially when you know what happened this season with these difficulties. It’s fantastic that we finished fourth with one game to go. The table never lies,” says Frick.
Frick survived two rounds with Vaduz
The ex-Serie A striker from the Ländle leads the FCL to Europe. But he has already achieved that as a coach. However, it was a bit easier: “It was like a Liechtenstein Cup winner against amateur teams.” After all: FC Vaduz reached the third round of the Europa League qualification in 2019. So survived two rounds!
So that was it for FC Luzern’s season. Almost anyway. “We are looking forward to the last game before hopefully a full house against Servette,” says Frick. “We are going to finish it seriously and try to win the game, because Servette is after all fighting for second place with Lugano.”
On July 27, the FCL will discuss the European sausage
But immediately after that another mission has to start, and that means: Europe! With the preparation for an already known date: July 27. The first legs then go into the second qualifying round for the Conference League. Since FC Luzern has created a shockingly bad image in Europe in its 122-year history, there is an obligation to change this by all means.
A record of horror
Frick put it this way: “That was before my time. I can’t change that. But we will do everything we can to cut a figure in Europe.” That’s not the wording you want to hear. There shouldn’t be “a little bit” for the FCL. Not for a club whose record has been over the past few years looks like this: in 2021 they lost twice 3-0 to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the third qualifying round of the Conference League 2019 in the qualification for the Europa League in exactly the same embarrassing way against Espanyol Barcelona 2018 0: 4 and 1: 3 against Olympiacos Piraeus. In the last ten years, FC Luzern have won only three of their 14 European games. In 2019 twice 1-0 against semi-professionals FC Klaksvik from the Faroe Islands and Osijek from Croatia. Negative highlight: Zero in the penalty shootout against the Nobodys of St Johnstone of Perth in Scotland.
FC Luzern has started a European adventure 14 times. He just survived three rounds! Seven of the 34 matches were won. It’s a horrible record.
