Finished! Simona Waltert is in the main draw of the French Open for the first time.

The Swiss contingent at the French Open is growing again. While Simona Waltert made it to the main draw via qualification, Dominic Stricker advanced as a lucky loser.

Stricker missed his first participation in a Grand Slam tournament on Thursday due to the defeat in the third and final qualifying round. Now the 20-year-old from Bern, who won the junior tournament in Paris in 2020, is benefiting from cancellations and luck. As one of three lucky losers, the world number 116 will meet American Tommy Paul, number 16 on the seed list, in the first round.

US opponents

Like Stricker, Simona Waltert (WTA 127) is about to make her debut at a major tournament. The 22-year-old from Graubünden wins her third match in qualifying with 6:2, 4:6, 6:4 against the almost 50 places worse Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot (WTA 175). Waltert’s opponent in the first round, Elizabeth Mandlik (WTA 118) from the US, also had to qualify.

The other Swiss qualifier Ylena In-Albon (WTA 148) also hits an American. If the 24-year-old Walliser wins the opening match against Claire Liu (WTA 100), a duel with the best seeded defending champion Iga Swiatek beckons in the second round.

The Swiss number 1 Belinda Bencic (WTA 12) starts with the Russian Elina Awanesjan (WTA 134), who has moved up as a lucky loser.

Both the opponent of Jil Teichmann (Sarah Errani) and the opponents of Stan Wawrinka (Albert Ramos-Vinolas) and Marc-Andrea Hüsler (Daniel Altmaier) have been known since Thursday after the draw. (SDA)
