Alberto Dainese has won the 17th stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia.

As expected, the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia ends with a bunch sprint after 197 km. The first to cross the finish line in Caorle, also known as “Little Venice”, was the Italian Alberto Dainese.

For Alberto Dainese it is the second stage success in a Grand Tour after winning the 11th Giro stage in the sprint from the field last year.

This time, the 25-year-old from Team DSM hoists his bike across the finish line, just ahead of fellow countryman Jonathan Milan and Australian Michael Matthews. Milan, who wears the points jersey of the best sprinter, has to settle for second place for the fourth time after his victory in the second stage.

Thomas further in pink

There are no changes at the top of the general classification. The Welshman Geraint Thomas, who regained the leader’s pink jersey the previous day, remains 18 seconds ahead of the Portuguese Joao Almeida and 29 seconds ahead of the Slovenian Primoz Roglic.

The flat stage to Caorle was the last chance for the sprinters until Sunday’s final stage in Rome. Now there are three steep sections in the Dolomites, all ending with a mountain finish, on Saturday as part of a mountain time trial. (SDA)
