It was a resounding slap in the face for Biel last Saturday. The Seeländer went down in Geneva 1:7. And Servette now has the first of two championship pucks on Tuesday.
Afterwards you heard the classic that in the play-offs it doesn’t matter whether you lose 1:2 or 1:7, for example, because every win – and therefore every defeat – counts the same. That is true in theory, but also in practice?
First of all good news for Biel. Since the introduction of the best-of-7 formula in 1998, there has been 50 times the opportunity to react to a defeat (at least 5 goals difference). And sure enough, the team that got hit found an answer 22 times and won the next game. And 12 times a team that was humiliated could still win the series.
There is a first time for everything…
But now the bad news for Biel supporters. In the final, the statistics look sobering: ten times there was a result with a difference of five or more goals. The beaten victim managed to win the next game three times.
But never before has a team won the championship after a staggering defeat in the final. Never.
- At the premiere of the play-offs in 1986, Lugano won the first final match against Davos 5-0 and then won the title in the best-of-3 series with a 7-5 in Davos.
- In 1988 the Grande Lugano won 10:4 in Kloten en route to a 3:0 final victory.
- In 1990, Lugano swept SC Bern 7-1 in Game 3 and then closed the bag 4-2.
- In 1992 Friborg managed to put away a 2:11 and then won 5:1 in Bern. The pot still went to SCB.
- In 1995 Kloten started with an 8:3 in Zug and then won 4:1 at home and the series 3:1
- In 1998 Zug beat Davos 11-4 in the third act. The HCD showed a reaction (4:2). However, EVZ won its first title.
- In 2006, Lugano hit HCD twice in the final (5:0 and 8:2). The Grisons could respond to the first with a 5:3. It was the only win.
- In 2017, SCB clearly won the first (5:0) and fifth game (6:1) against Zug and then went away (4:2 and 5:1) and won the last series 4:2.
Finally good news for Biel. Just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it’s impossible. A year ago, EVZ, as is known, trailed 3-0 in the final for the first time.
