The cyclist Jan Christen, the track and field athlete Audrey Werroand the fencing team of Théo Brochard, Diego Erbetta, Ian Hauri and Sven Vineis are honored as Young Athletes of the Year 2022 by Swiss Sports Aid.
They were chosen by a panel consisting of a media jury and an expert jury, and voted online by 10,000 people. The sponsorship award of the Swiss Sports Aid Foundation, which was awarded for the 41st time, is endowed with CHF 12,000 (individual) or CHF 15,000 (team). In the past, the later Olympic champions Marco Odermatt, Belinda Bencic, Nicola Spirig and Nino Schurter were among the honorees.
The 18-year-old Jan Christen from the Aargau cycling mecca Gippingen can look back on an incredibly successful youth season: cyclo-cross world champion, European road champion, silver mountain bike world championship and Swiss champion in the track, cyclo-cross, mountain bike and time trial disciplines. The great cycling talent has already signed a five-year contract with the World Tour team UAE Emirates. This year he wants to make the jump to the elite category.
Audrey Werro from Freiburg, who turned 19 a few days ago, won silver over 800 m at the U20 World Championships and became both indoor and outdoor Swiss champion. She also just missed out on a medal at the elite European Indoor Championships a few weeks ago.
Theo Brochard (La Chaux-de-Fonds), Diego Erbetta (Lausanne), Ian Hauri and Sven Vineis (both from Geneva) came into contact with fencing in different ways and found each other as a team. The epee quartet from Romandie won the European championship title in the U20 category. (SDA)
