Security staff at London’s largest airport, Heathrow, went on strike for ten days on Friday. Only a few flights are canceled in Switzerland.
The 1,400 members of the Unite union are walking out in response to the airport operator’s failure to offer higher wages in recent wage negotiations, the PA news agency reported Thursday night.
When asked by the AWP news agency on Friday morning, a spokeswoman for Zurich Airport was unable to say how the strike would affect services from Zurich to London Heathrow and vice versa.
Airline Swiss had not yet planned any changes to the flight plan on Friday afternoon. The situation at the airport is being continuously analysed, a spokeswoman for the airline said.
British Airways cancels some flights
Upon request, British Airways (BA) also announced that 5 percent of flights from Heathrow Airport were canceled during the strike period. This corresponds to 16 round trips per day. According to the BA website, five flights to and from Zurich and two via Geneva were canceled from March 31 to April 9.
Affected passengers would be contacted. They received a full refund or were able to rebook on another BA flight or airline. (sda/awp)
