Which Swiss are still there?

After YB was eliminated from the group, there were no clubs left, only four players and a referee. Three of them are goalkeepers: the Nati duo Yann Sommer (Inter Milan) and Gregor Kobel (Dortmund) and the Swiss-born Porto professional Diogo Costa, who is in goal for the Portuguese national team. And above all, ManCity defense column and defending champion Manuel Akanji. It cannot be ruled out that a Swiss referee, Sandro Schärer, will also be used in the knockout phase.

Who will win the title?

For the bookmakers it is clear: Manchester City is defending the pot (odds 2.9). Follow behind – surprise! – the struggling Bayern and Real Madrid. Anyone who puts their money on mega-outsider Copenhagen will become rich (odds 500). The betting odds are in line with the experts’ predictions, although they rate Real Madrid as highly as City and give Bayern little chance of winning the title in their current state. In fact, the round of 16 match against Lazio is likely to have a major impact on coach Thomas Tuchel’s fate. If he were gone, he would probably lose his job.

Where is the final?

For the eleventh time, the premier class ends in London’s Wembley Stadium; So far there has only been one home win for an English team (Liverpool 1978). By the way: the Europa League final will take place in Dublin and the Conference League final will take place in Athens.

How much money is available?

In total, UEFA will distribute 2.002 billion euros among the 32 clubs this season (from the group stage). The starting bonus is 15.6 million, and almost ten million is available for qualifying for the round of 16. Those who reach the quarter-finals will receive another 10.6 million, and 12.5 million for the semi-finals. The finalists will each receive 15.5 million, and the winner will receive an additional 4.5 million. There are also point bonuses for individual games and shares from the TV and Marketing pool. The winner will likely end up with a total of around 100 million. For comparison: 465 million in bonuses flow to the Europa League and 235 million to the Conference League.

Why is this season so special?

The familiar format will be played for the last time with eight groups of four, each with six match days and a subsequent knockout phase. From next season (almost) everything will be different: after qualifying, there will be a competition phase with 36 teams. Each team plays against eight different opponents, who are drawn at random. At the end there is a table where the best eight teams are guaranteed to reach the round of 16. The teams in places nine to 24 will play in a knockout round for the remaining eight places in the round of 16. By the way: despite the expansion to 36 clubs, Switzerland will not have a permanent starting place in the new mode for the time being.
