General Motors will enter Formula 1 as an engine supplier from 2028. The Americans’ engines are intended to equip the future Formula 1 team Andretti-Cadillac. “With our extensive technical and racing expertise, we are confident we will develop a successful engine for the series and position Andretti-Cadillac as a true factory team,” said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors. Cadillac is a brand of General Motors.

FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem, who is committed to expanding the starting field, was immediately pleased. “The presence of the American cult brands Andretti and GM strengthens the long-term sustainability of the sport,” said the former rally driver on Instagram.

The world federation has already given the green light to former racing driver Michael Andretti’s application for a starting spot in Formula 1, and the development of the Andretti-Cadillac racing team has been in full swing for some time. Now, however, it is the turn of the management of the racing series and rights holder Liberty Media. There is strong resistance from the ten established teams to the plans to expand the starting field.

Andretti hopes for approval before 2025, probably because the current basic contract still applies. It stipulates that each new acquisition must pay an entrance fee of approximately $200 million, which will be distributed among the existing teams. For the agreement to take effect after 2025, the racing teams are pushing to increase this payment to $600 million. (SDA/mom)
