A few weeks after the tragic death of former Nottingham Panthers ice hockey professional Adam Johnson (†29) during a British Cup match, South Yorkshire police have arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter. This was reported by the newspaper ‘The Yorkshire Post’. Police have not yet released any information about the man’s identity. It is unclear whether it was opponent Matt Petgrave (31) who hit Johnson with the knife.
“We launched an investigation immediately after this tragedy and have since carried out extensive investigations to piece together the events that led to Adam’s death in these unprecedented circumstances,” Chief Inspector Becs Horsfall told the newspaper.
Death causes discussions
Johnson’s tragic incident took place on October 26 during the Challenge Cup match between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers. During a duel, Johnson’s opponent hit him in the neck with his skate blade. A few hours later, the ex-NHL star died in hospital. His death sparked a worldwide discussion about the mandatory wearing of neck protection for ice hockey players. (Gentlemen)
