World Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970.

Saturday is World Earth Day. The day was first held in 1970 and has been held on April 22 every year since then. With a history of more than 50 years, “World Earth Day” is one of the first climate protection and environmental movements in the world.

For this year’s World Earth Day, Google analyzed climate change search trends in Switzerland. Here are the most common Google topics in the last 12 months related to climate and environment:

  1. waste management
  2. heat wave
  3. climate change
  4. drought
  5. solar energy
  6. solar systems
  7. Tropical cyclone
  8. wind turbines
  9. Renewable energy
  10. wind energy

The top 10 shows that the Swiss are very interested in the topic of climate change – and are also looking for information. The topics users search for range from recycling to weather phenomena to renewables.

The search for the latter can probably also be explained by the imminent power shortage as a result of the war in Ukraine. The uncertainty whether there will be sufficient and, above all, affordable electricity and fuel oil in the winter has occupied the minds of the population over the past twelve months.

It is also interesting which questions are asked of Google in connection with the climate. The top 5 are:

  • What to do about climate change?
  • Where is climate change visible?
  • What do banks have to do with climate change?
  • What is bad for the climate?

Video of the glacier

In addition to evaluating the Swiss’ search behavior, Google has published a video created using a “Google Earth” time-lapse recording. It shows how the glacier continuously retreated between 1984 and 2023.
