Recommendation for corona vaccination is limited

The federal government is adjusting its corona vaccination advice! The Federal Public Service of Public Health (BAG) and the Federal Vaccination Commission (Ekif) have formulated the vaccination advice for the spring and summer of 2023. Based on the experience of the past three years and on the epidemiology of other respiratory viruses, the two authorities assume “that the coronavirus will circulate less for seasonal reasons,” according to a press release. From the beginning of April, a Covid 19 vaccination is therefore “recommended only for certain people with risk factors”.

Both the individual risk of infection and the burden on the health system are estimated to be “low” in spring and summer, according to the statement. “The currently circulating omicron subvariants cause fairly mild infections compared to previous virus variants.” For people without risk factors, there is therefore hardly any risk of becoming seriously ill. That is why the vaccination advice no longer applies to these people.

For people at particular risk, a Covid 19 vaccination is only recommended if the treating physician deems it “medically necessary in an individual case” and if it can be expected to provide temporary increased protection against a serious illness.

The last vaccination or the last known infection must have been at least six months ago. “The Covid 19 vaccination for severely immunodeficient people remains recommended,” the BAG writes.

Hardly any effect on the transfer

The two authorities assess the effect of the vaccination on the transmission of the currently circulating viruses as “minimal”. If, contrary to expectations, a wave of outbreaks occurs, the vaccination advice will be adjusted, the BAG emphasizes. (Russian)
