When paying with debit card: no more extra costs!

Sellers pass the costs on to their customers.

On Wednesday, the National Council supported two motions by Jacqueline de Quattro (FDP/VD) and Vincent Maitre (Center/GE). Both criticized the fact that recently introduced Visa and Mastercard debit cards placed too much of a burden on retailers, restaurants and hotels due to costs. Ultimately, these costs were passed on to the customers, Maitre said in the council.

The interchange fee is a fee that a Swiss card issuer (usually a bank) receives from the payment processor when using the credit cards it issues. The dealer ultimately has to pay the costs.

Maximum 3.50 francs per payment

While payments with the Maestro card are charged a fee of 26 cents per payment, payments with Visa and Mastercard debit cards are charged a fee of a certain percentage of the transaction in addition to a fixed amount – a maximum of 3.50 francs.

The Competition Commission (Comco) has been considering fees for the use of debit cards for some time. In June 2023, it launched an investigation against card providers Visa and Mastercard in connection with the debit cards. The aim was to reduce interchange fees or interchange fees, the Comco wrote at the time.

In its negative statement, the Federal Council also refers to the work of Comco and price monitoring. Both authorities have successfully intervened several times. The legal instruments were sufficient, said Economic Affairs Minister Guy Parmelin. (SDA/sf)
