Pope Francis temporarily returned to the hospital on Wednesday. The 87-year-old was examined at a clinic in Rome the morning after the weekly general audience, the Vatican announced.

According to a report by the Italian news agency Ansa, the head of more than 1.4 billion Catholics was able to return to the Vatican shortly afterwards.

According to information from the Vatican, Francis has been suffering from it for several days “mild flu”. That is why he canceled several public appearances. Before the visit to the Gemelli Hospital on the Tiber Island in Rome, he himself said in the general audience: “I still have a bit of a cold.” On Saturday, the Pope plans to receive German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for the first time for a private audience.

The Pope, who has been in power since 2013, has been increasingly concerned about his health for some time. In recent months he has had several problems with inflammation of the airways. Last year he was admitted twice to a clinic in Rome. Due to a knee problem, he now often sits in a wheelchair during public performances.
