Pro-Russian separatists want to be protected by Moscow. Of what?

Pro-Russian separatists from the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria are asking Moscow for “protection” against Moldova. The reason for this would be a so-called “economic blockade”. Russian media report this.

A resolution adopted by the separatists states that Transnistria faces “unprecedented challenges and threats of an economic, social, humanitarian and military-political nature.” According to the separatists, “more than 220,000 Russian citizens live in Transnistria.” Russia should therefore enter into the negotiation process as a mediator.

At a special congress on Wednesday, Transnistrian authorities decided to make a corresponding statement, as reported by Russian news agencies and local media. According to the resolution, Moscow is asked “to take measures to defend Transnistria in the face of increasing pressure from Moldova.” It also emphasizes that the Republic of Moldova has “increased the use of blockades and restrictive measures aimed at undermining economic potential, destroying the foundations of independence and imposing foreign values.” (nad/AFP)
