However, the world’s largest online retailer stressed that they are sticking to the concept and will continue to operate more than 20 stores. A spokesperson for the Bloomberg financial service said on Friday that Amazon wants to be guided by location and functions that are particularly popular with customers.
The Geekwire website previously reported that the group would close four of its “Amazon Go” stores in San Francisco and two each in New York and Seattle. There are several shops of this type in each of the cities.
Cameras and other sensors in stores record what items customers buy from the shelves. When they leave the store, the purchase is made automatically. Quite small shops in inner cities have suffered from the consequences of the corona pandemic as many employees work from home instead of the office.
The first store under the Amazon Go brand opened at the group’s headquarters in Seattle in 2018. Amazon now offers the technology to other retailers as well. At Whole Foods, the grocery chain bought for nearly $14 billion, the group sticks to cash registers. Amazon already closed its bookstores and pop-up stores last year.
