Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) joined Newcastle in October 2021. The question now is whether the investor group lied at the time to get the Premier League to go through with the deal.
The debate was prompted by statements by the chairman of Newcastle about a trial in the US. Oddly enough, it’s not about football, it’s about golf.
State-owned Newcastle or not?
Flashback to October 2021: The Premier League confirmed the entry of the PIF into Newcastle as the investor group had submitted binding documents that their entry would not make the club controlled by the Saudi state. A state club from the Premier League is – in contrast to human rights violations – a no-go.
This is where the process between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour comes into play. The first is another PIF project launched in 2022 that aims to attack the PGA Tour in its supremacy with higher prize money. In a lawsuit between these two parties in the US, statements have surfaced that contradict what has been said in the Premier League.
Amnesty: Premier League must act now
The name of Yasir Al-Rumayyan, PIF governor and chairman of Newcastle, appears in documents relating to the court hearings. He demands that the fund should be seen as “the sovereign instrument of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” and not as a mere third party. So the opposite of what the Premier League was assured.
Amnesty International’s Peter Frankental holds the Premier League responsible for the “Independent”. Saudi Arabia is systematically attempting to engage in sportswashing (trying to boost its image with sports investments) as the country’s human rights record has continued to deteriorate over the past 18 months. Also because there is currently a bid from Qatar for Manchester United, the league bosses have to check the commitments made at the time.
