The period to replace your basic insurance expires in a few days. Comparison portal Comparis has already evaluated which health insurance companies can look forward to having the most new customers. While KPT’s core insurance products are the most in-demand products in autumn 2022, another health insurance company became the crossover queen this year.

Concordia ranks first among those with basic insurance. Sanitas comes in second, followed by CSS. Last year’s winner KPT is in eighth place. “Assura has not yet managed to recover and will continue to lose customers,” says Comparis health insurance expert Felix Schneuwly.

  3. CSS
  4. helsana
  5. Atupri
  6. senpani

For the ranking, Comparis examined search queries on the comparison portal between October 1 and 15, 2023, evaluating which health insurance company the most quotes were ordered from.

Axa also made an evaluation for Blick. This is based on approximately 45,000 changes made through the Axa exchange service. Here’s what’s notable: “We find that in most cases, we consistently choose the cheapest basic insurance company, even if it is a small (and unknown) insurance company,” says Axa. Change winner here: EGK Gesundheitkasse, Aquilana and Concordia in third place. According to Axa, Swica, Klug and KPT are among the losers this year.

The family doctor model is gradually losing its appeal

“Many policyholders are looking for models with larger premium discounts for next year than are available for family doctor models,” says Comparis’ Schneuwly. Overall, the family medicine model is still the most popular. However, the model lost significant interest compared to the previous year.

In 2023, the Telmed basic insurance search share increased, especially on the comparison portal. This places Telmed models in second place on the popularity scale of the four most common basic insurance models in 2023.

Less money in your wallet due to health insurance

Rising health insurance premiums will reduce growth in Switzerland’s average disposable income by 0.4 percentage points in 2023. This is recommended by the health insurance premium index of the Federal Statistical Office (BFS).

The index can be used to estimate the effects of increases in health insurance premiums on income development. In 2023, basic insurance premiums increased by 5.4 percent. Supplementary insurance premiums decreased by 0.6 percent.

Bottom line: Higher premiums reduce the increase in average disposable income. This means: Purchasing power is shrinking. Patrick Berger

HMO models were the model with the highest increase in search queries, with an increase of 2.6 percent for adults and 2.8 percent for young adults. Approximately one-fifth of those who requested a quote were looking for a quote for this alternative insurance model. “Demand for HMO models is increasing because they are generally cheaper than GP and Telmed models,” explains Schneuwly.

Demand for standard basic insurance, with free choice of doctor, remained stable. However, in a five-year comparison, this model broke down the most.

There is high demand for franchises

According to Comparis, the most frequently searched items (around 55 percent) are those with a discount of 2,500 francs. So this high franchise has increased significantly in the last five years.

The maximum deductible is suitable for insured people with expected medical expenses of up to 2,000 francs per year. “As premiums increase, insured people are willing to pay more themselves with a maximum deductible in exchange for a discount of 1,540 francs in case of illness,” Schneuwly analyzes.

However, the minimum exemption of 300 francs also increased during the same period.

Rewards are getting closer together

In summary, Schneuwly says: “The reduction in premium differences for comparable insurance products shows that competition between health insurers is working.” Alternative insurance models that reward the efficiency and quality of insured healthcare services are now in greater demand. However, alternative insurance models offer even higher discounts.
