Tunnel drama in India: Video of men who were detained for 10 days published Many hundreds of years in prison in gigantic trial against mafia – ex-politician also has to go to prison

The first video footage of workers trapped in a collapsed highway tunnel for 10 days has been released in India. The images come from a camera that was sent to the 41 men through a tube.

epa10987151 A distributed photo, provided by the Information Department of the Indian government of Uttarkashi, shows a worker trapped in a tunnel standing in front of a camera sent down a pipe through a rescue line.

Local media reported this on Tuesday. The recordings show the captured people wearing helmets and communicating with helpers outside via walkie-talkie. “If you’re okay, come on camera,” an off-camera rescuer asks. “All of you, get on camera.” For the families of the men who were at the scene of the accident, it was a relief to see the videos, the “Indian Express” wrote.

The workers had now received their first hot meal in ten days, the report said. The rice and lentil dish was sent to the men in bottles through a newly drilled tube. Until now, the captive men were only connected to the outside world through a very narrow pipe, through which they could obtain dried fruit and water. The men will also receive mobile phones and chargers in the coming days, local television station NDTV reports.

The highway tunnel under construction partially collapsed after a landslide on November 12. The 4.5 kilometer long connection will be constructed near the town of Uttarkashi in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand – a region with many Hindu temples that attracts pilgrims. (saw/sda/dpa)
