Château Latour is a winery located in the heart of the Bordeaux viticulture region, in the French commune of Pauillac. It is one of the world’s most famous producers of long-lasting fine wines, and the sight of just one bottle raises the pulse of Bordeaux fans. The small tower, which gives the aristocratic winery its name and also adorns the label on the bottles, was originally used to defend against pirate ships.

In 1855, Château Latour was one of five wineries named Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Bordeaux wine classification. Even then the wines were known for their longevity, elegance and sophistication and were priced very high compared to other Bordeaux wineries. Since 1993, the winery has been owned by French billionaire François-Henri Pinault (60), who is in a relationship with actress Salma Hayek (56).

That’s how valuable a magnum bottle of Château Latour 1976 is.

However, there were times when the wines of Château Latour did not even come close to the quality they could make. Especially between 1987 and 1993, other Pauillac wineries achieved much better results.

After a complete overhaul of all pantry systems and millions of dollars of investment, quality was once again at the top of Bordeaux from 1994. The winery made the sweeping decision to withdraw from the en primeur business in 2012, after which it released the wines at a later date. 2015 is the youngest Latour vintage currently available.

Blick reader Martin Berner is lucky because he has a rare 1.5-liter magnum of this premium wine. But over the years his Magnum has lost some of its fluidity and the level is supposedly in the upper part of the shoulder. But the wine capsule and label are in good condition. As for vintage, 1976 was relatively warm in Bordeaux, like most of Europe. As a rule, fruity wines were produced, but sometimes with a little coarse tannins.

With very few exceptions under perfect storage conditions, all Bordeaux wines of this crop have probably passed their peak. Opening the magnum bottle of Martin Berner is therefore associated with a certain residual risk. In specialty stores, a Magnum Château Latour 1976 currently costs between 700 and 900 francs, depending on its condition.
