Stan Wawrinka wins his starting duel at the Masters in Rome.

Stan Wawrinka (38) survives the starting round in his fourth Masters 1000 tournament this year. De Romand wins on the clay court in Rome against the Belarusian Ilya Ivashka (29) 6: 2, 6: 4.

Although number 84 in the world rankings is slightly worse than the Belarusian number 75, Wawrinka is the favorite in the competition. The three-time Grand Slam winner remains against Ivashka without a double fault and can fend off the only break ball against herself. In the next round, the Romand will meet Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, number 33 in the world ranking. The two have dueled dozens of times. The balance is 7:5 in favor of the Swiss.

Wawrinka has to defend a push to the sixteenth final in Rome with a view to the world ranking. A year ago, Novak Djokovic threw him out of the tournament. He also lost the final to the Serbs in 2008 at the last major tournament before the French Open. In 2015, Wawrinka knocked out Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals in Rome, but failed in the semifinals in the Swiss duel against Roger Federer. (SDA)
