The opposition criticized a possible expansion of the prime minister’s powers at the expense of the president. Any constitutional amendment in Italy requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers of parliament. Failing that, each proposal must be voted on in a referendum. Several attempts have already been made to push through constitutional reform to ensure greater political stability. For example, former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi failed in a referendum on the constitution in 2016 and subsequently resigned.
