While “Logan” director James Mangold takes us far into the past of the “Star Wars” universe to tell the story of the very first Jedi, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will show us with a kind of “Star Wars 10” that Rey (Daisy Ridley) has built a new Jedi Order.
But in addition to these two titles, a third “Star Wars” movie was recently announced: The project of Dave Filoni must be some kind “Avengers of the Saga” – because it’s going to be a major crossover movie to wrap up the events of the current Disney Plus series like “The Mandalorian” or “Ahsoka”. As with Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ films, many characters face a major threat. But which characters?
While the participation of Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), his adopted son Grogu or Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) is very likely, there are no statements about the personal tableau of the adventure. But there’s one thing that gets fans excited. After “Star Wars” boss Kathleen Kennedy already revealed, that the staff for the major crossover film does not necessarily have to be recruited only from series on Disney +also noted Dave Filoni in the podcast clear that her vision goes much further. He and Jon Favreau watch everything. In the end, there will be quite a “scream of characters” who all want to be in the movie, he describes the many options from which to choose.
His partner Favreau adds in the same podcast that it’s like taking action figures out of a box. Which characters they will adopt for the film has not yet been decided and will also depend a lot on the final story. In addition to novels and comics, video games are also explicitly mentioned as possible origins of these characters – and that gives fans a lot of hope right now.
Will Cal Kestis fight alongside the Mandalorian?
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the sequel to the critically acclaimed video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, has just been released (read more about the game here on our sister site GameStar). The focus is on Cal Kestis, one of the Jedi who survived Order 66 and managed to hide. Fans have long wanted the hugely popular character to make the leap into a series or movie. After all, there is already an actor in Cameron Monaghan. The ‘Gotham’ and ‘Shameless’ star has already embodied (and voiced) the character in the video game’s motion capture.
The main problem is the Star Wars timeline: the video games set between “Episode 3” and “Episode 4” are set about twenty years before Filoni’s upcoming film is set between “Episode 6” and “Episode 7”. Even though it’s likely Cal Kestis will still be alive by then and he could very well communicate with the Mandalorian and Co. At first glance, 29-year-old Monaghan is too young to play him – especially if the rumors are true that Filoni’s film will hit theaters in 2026. Recasting with an actor in his 40s would be a big risk as it could anger fans.
Even if many fans pin their hopes on Filoni and Favreau’s statements, don’t let them grow too much. We think it’s unlikely that Cal Kestis will appear in Filoni’s major crossover movie. A cinema debut for the character is currently not in sight – but who knows what future series will bring. Maybe there will be a place in the future (or will it ever get its own series?). Finally, Lucasfilm should also record how popular Cal Kestis and actor Cameron Monaghan are and how successful the games are, which according to some statistics reach more people than the series on Disney+. In a funny promotional video, Cameron Monaghan just met one of the cinema legends – Mark Hamill himself:
