Jil Teichmann is not coming out of her low form. She fails in Madrid in the second round.

Jil Teichmann, who benefited from a bye in the first round, fails in the second round after winning the starting set against Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (33/WTA 77). The 6:3, 2:6, 4:6 is the fourth defeat in the last five tournaments for the Swiss. The number 30 in the world ranking gave up a 3-0 lead against Tsurenko with a double break in the third set.

“I’m going through a difficult phase, I have a lot of exciting matches that I end up losing,” said the 25-year-old after the game. Meanwhile, the southpaw has not won in seven weeks on the WTA Tour after advancing to the third round in Indian Wells. “It doesn’t feel right. But unfortunately I don’t have a magic trick to bring about a turnaround quickly.” But she is aware that luck will eventually fall back on her side.

Due to the premature failure on the clay court in Madrid, where she advanced to the semi-finals a year ago, Teichmann drops to a place around 55th in the world rankings. A week later, last year’s quarter-finalist in Rome has more points to defend. She then competes in Strasbourg before opening at the French Open.

Alcaraz via detours

In the men’s number two Carlos Alcaraz (19) has to worry about defending his title after a clearly lost first set (2:6). But from the second set the Spaniard emerges and wins his match against Emil Ruusuvuori (24/ATP 41) 2: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 2. (SDA/nsa)
