“If we really want to save glaciers, we better start protecting the climate,” glaciologist Matthias Huss of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in Zurich said when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday.

He studied the impact of the world’s first such glacier recovery project on the Morteratsch Glacier in Graubünden. The results are published in the March issue of the Swiss Water Management Association’s expert journal.

According to the study, snowmaking could stop ice loss by a third to a quarter by 2060. This will slightly delay the fall of the glacier. “Long term, it’s just a drop in the bucket,” Huss said.
