A day after the start of the largest joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, North Korea fired two ballistic missiles, according to Seoul. North Korean missiles were fired into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, the South Korean military said on Tuesday. “Our military has increased surveillance and alerts for possible further missile launches.”
The United States and South Korea began their largest joint military exercise in five years on Monday. They described the ten-day “Shield of Freedom” maneuver as a response to the “changing security environment” in the region due to increased aggression by North Korea in recent months. North Korea had strongly criticized the maneuver hours before it began, with the internationally isolated country saying it had already launched two strategic cruise missiles from a submarine.
Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have increased drastically recently. The communist leadership in Pyongyang has repeatedly threatened military escalation in the region.
