For the first time in 29 months, Spain’s new vehicle market was above 100,000 units in June
For the first time in 29 months, the Spanish new vehicle market was above 100,000 units in June, the sixth consecutive month of sales growth, with 101,805 registrations, 13.3% more than last year; and more than half a million cars sold in the first six months (505,421 passenger cars), 24% more than in the same period in 2022. Although these results are far from those collected in June in the period 2015-2019, according to large employers in the sector; Anfac, Faconauto and Ganvam.
The improvement of the Spanish market as a whole is also transferred to Galiciawhere sales in June increased by 10.2% to 2,442 registrations, and half-yearly sales reached 12,338 units, 10.9% more than in the same period last year.
Individuals and companies
Private drivers continue to drive demand for new cars in Spain, with 203,998 units in the first half (15.2% more), followed by companies (201,032 registrations and 17.2% more); and more broadly, rental companies, which are buying vehicles at high speed to have the largest fleet and avoid shortages, in what is expected to be another record summer, with more than 85 million tourists forecast to visit Spain in 2023 .
The good rhythm of the market coincides with the normalization of the rhythm of production due to improving the supply of microchips. In May alone, Spanish factories increased their production by 35.9% compared to the same month in 2022, with a quarter of a million units assembled.
The sudden jump in registrations of electric vehicles stands out, with an increase of 73.6% in June compared to the same month of the previous year. For the full year, gasoline-powered and electrified models tied for market share, with 43.3%, respectively; while diesel cars account for barely 13.3% of sales.
Anfac, the manufacturers’ association, points out that the rate of electrification should be “even higher” and compares the Spanish reality with the rest of Europe, where the market share of electrified people is twice as high. They also warn that “we will have to see how customers are affected by the fact that interest rates are above 4 percent.”
Faconauto explains the growth in sales by better supply of cars to the market, but also by a strong increase in company registrations.
Once again, the great working class surrenders to the low price of the Dacia Sandero
Dacia Sandero, produced by the Renault group, with 14,147 units registered between January and June, is the best-selling car in the first half of the year in Spain, with an increase of 51.1% in units delivered compared to the same period last year 2022. The most economical SUV on the market and a great favorite of working families, it is offered with a gasoline or dual-fuel gasoline and LPG engine (the latter with the DGT eco label) from 13,190 euros. They are followed by Fiat 500 and Seat Arona in terms of volume of demand. And the big surprise of the Chinese model, the MG ZS, stands out, with a growth of 600%. By brand, Toyota is the one that sells the most in Spain.
