Apply for funding for your electric car: This is how it works

The year is 2023 and this year you can again receive a subsidy for an electric car in the Netherlands. If you buy a (used) electric vehicle on or after January 1st, you can apply for a subsidy from January 10th, 9 am.

You will receive a subsidy of 2,950 euros for a new electric car. For a used electric vehicle, that’s 2,000 euros.

Apply for SEPP

Applying for the private electric car subsidy (SEPP) is not complicated. You go to the website of the Dutch business agency. Then you can apply for funding here.

This SEPP does not only apply to the direct purchase of a (used) electric car. You can also receive a subsidy of 2,950 or 2,000 euros if you lease a new or used car privately. This only applies to cars that have an (original) new price of between 12,000 and 45,000 euros. If you can drive less than 120 kilometers on one battery charge, you are not eligible for SEPP.

EV subsidies not for all EV buyers

In any case, it is sometimes difficult to get a subsidy for electric cars in the Netherlands. At the beginning of the year, 67 million euros are available for new electric vehicles and 32.4 million euros for used electric cars. This is exactly the same as last year, although a few million have been transferred from the new EV fund to that for used electric cars.

A total of 22,700 people and 16,200 used buyers can apply for funding for new electric cars.

On the last day, the day the pot is empty, the remaining grant money is divided among the applicants of that day. If you buy an EV after that date, you’re out of luck and won’t get a subsidy.

Assuming: The funding pot will be empty on March 1, 2023. We will raffle the budget that is still available on this day among all applications from March 1st. The time of submission is irrelevant. If you submit the application at 12:01 AM on March 1, you have the same chances as someone who submits at 11:59 PM on March 1. – RVO
