At least 120 people have died in the serious train accident in India, according to rescuers. The number of deaths is likely to increase further.
A passenger train derailed about 220 kilometers southwest of Kolkata and fell onto a parallel track and hundreds of people were left trapped in damaged wagons, Indian media reports. Then a train from the opposite direction collided with the overturned wagons. This passenger train also derailed, according to the Ministry of Railways.
According to reports, a third train was involved in the accident, a freight train. There was initially no confirmation from the railway authorities.
Desperate rescue efforts
Footage shows rescuers climbing over the wreckage to force open doors and windows and free survivors with cutting torches.
It is unclear how many people are still trapped in the interlocking wrecked wagons. (kes)
