The traditional Hotel Sonne in Einsiedeln SZ is a good address on Klosterplatz. Or better yet. Directly facing the pilgrimage monastery, the hotel has been empty since New Year’s Eve. It closed abruptly on December 31, 2022. As the newspaper “Einsiedler Anzeiger” reports, this place will soon become a haven for young people.
The traditional company was taken over by Zurich entrepreneur Hansjürg Klingler on 1 January. Klingler was a longtime member of the Lindt & Sprüngli Board of Directors. Under the name “Ristorante Klingler’s”, Herrliberger operates two Mediterranean-focused restaurants in Zurich and Lucerne. A third restaurant was to be added with the “Sonne” in Einsiedeln.
In an interview with the Einsiedler Zeitung, Klingler expressed his intention to open the Hotel and Restaurant Sonne this spring after being renovated with a new concept. “Einsiedler Anzeiger,” the entrepreneur’s economic adviser reported on December 30, “Hansjürg Klingler will do something nice with the sun, which should do justice to the location at Klosterplatz.” However, it is too early for detailed information.
Hotel closing and never reopening
Since then, there has been silence about the future of the business as all the furniture has been constantly sold and removed.
Now with the sun it is clear what will happen next: the canton is renting the hotel. For a limited time of two years, unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (UMA) must live there. This was confirmed to the newspaper by the cantonal economics department on 1 June.
Section Secretary Peter Reichmuth emphasizes that the number of underage and unaccompanied youth refugees (UMA) has increased sharply in the last two years. It is the federal government that distributes the UMA to the cantons in proportion to the population. Minors in the canton of Schwyz would remain in the cantonal structures until they came of age to relieve the communities. The canton is therefore “responsible for appropriate housing and ensures the integrity, development and promotion of young people”.
The 2025 Sun will be destroyed
According to Reichmuth, the canton is looking for new properties, especially as the Biberhof transit center in Biberbrugg SZ has reached its capacity limits. “For this purpose, the canton leases the vacant Sonne Hotel at Klosterplatz in Einsiedeln.”
An information event is planned for the population shortly after the new refugee shelter opens.
The lease term is limited to two years. Then comes the final end of the sun. The owners are planning a new building project for 2025. (cut)
