Reports: Pence will not be prosecuted as classified documents found US debt drama ends: prevent government default

According to media reports, former US Vice President Mike Pence is not under threat of criminal charges over the classified government documents discovered about him. The investigation has been completed and no charges will be filed against Pence, US broadcasters NBC and CNN quote from a letter from the Justice Department to Pence’s lawyers. The timing is right for the 63-year-old: he wants to announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination next week.

Pence admitted earlier this year that classified documents from his time as vice president had turned up in his private home. FBI investigators then searched his property. Previously, documents with confidential markings from his time as vice president had also appeared in President Joe Biden’s private rooms. Findings from former President Donald Trump already caused a stir last summer. These two cases are each being investigated by an independent special counsel. The results are still pending. Pence was Trump’s runner-up from 2017 to 2021. (sda/dpa)
