But the renovation is tough: this Scottish castle only costs 34,000 francs

This 24-bedroom Scottish castle is for sale for just under CHF 34,000.

Who hasn’t dreamed of having their own castle for just CHF 34,000? It even sounds like a bad joke when you look at current house and apartment prices. Even for a one-room apartment you often pay in Switzerland. But not abroad.

In Scotland, a castle is now for sale for just £30,000. A real bargain. But only at first glance. But there is a catch: the renovation costs are estimated at 13.5 million Swiss francs.

In the middle of nothing

The castle is located on Fetlar Island, one of the most remote places in Scotland. The island can only be reached by ferry or plane. Probably one of the reasons why only 69 people live there. This makes the stay perfect for nature lovers. Set in rolling grassy terrain, the castle overlooks jagged cliffs and neighboring islands.

The now derelict castle was built in 1825 by Arthur Nicolson, a Scottish merchant. It has been uninhabited since 1970. Despite this, it was made water and windproof after a fundraising campaign about 10 years ago. The lucky buyer can look forward to a main residence with 24 bedrooms, a courtyard, several gardens and a tower that once served as an observatory – if restored.

Castle to be converted into a luxury retreat

Drew Ratter, director of the Brough Lodge Trust, told CNN of the castle’s owners: “Several investors have already expressed interest and have contacted our sales team. One buyer even submitted a detailed proposal for the conversion.” We are currently checking this and hope for further offers in the meantime.

The plan proposed by the Brough Lodge Trust would “fully respect the historic character of the building,” Ratter said. The aim is to transform the castle into a luxury retreat that would boost tourism and create about 14 jobs. (Mrs)
