A Russian court has fined messaging service WhatsApp for failing to remove banned content. A Moscow court on Thursday sentenced WhatsApp to a fine of three million rubles (about CHF 34,000) for failing to remove content at the request of authorities. It is the first punishment for Whatsapp in Russia for such an offence.
According to Russian news agencies, the service had not removed a chat group offering an antidepressant. The sale of the drug is banned in Russia.
Messaging service classified as “extremist”.
Since the massive offensive against Ukraine, Russian authorities have been trying to censor certain groups on the internet. The American company Meta, to which Whatsapp belongs, has already been banned in Russia and classified as “extremist”. The other meta-services Facebook and Instagram were also blocked in Russia, as well as Twitter. Whatsapp, on the other hand, remained accessible.
In the past, companies like Google, Twitter, and Tiktok have been convicted of failing to remove content classified as illegal. Whatsapp has already been convicted of not storing Russian users’ data on servers in Russia. This is against Russian regulations. (AFP)
