The union wants to increase the pressure on rail operators in the dispute over higher wages and better working conditions. The British news agency PA reported on Wednesday that no trains were running at all on the Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Northern and Thameslink routes.
Rail strikes are also planned for the next few days. The RMT (Rail, Maritime and Transport Union) union called for union action on Friday. The Aslef members want to stop working again on Saturday.
This week’s strikes are just the latest wave in several wage disputes that have been going on for months and have repeatedly led to massive disruptions in rail operations. The unions are demanding wage increases in line with the sharp rise in the cost of living. The railway companies are referring to losses during the pandemic.
