Fermented grape juice naturally contains sulfur. Additional sulfur dioxide is added to most wines before bottling to protect them from unwanted oxidation and to preserve them better. The sulfur label on wine labels has long been mandatory and is used for transparency as some people are sensitive to sulfur dioxide and can develop allergic reactions or asthma attacks.

Ireland, the first country in the world, has now decided to require more mandatory information on the labels of spirits such as beer and wine. In addition to the alcohol content, information about the warning and sulfur for pregnant women, the exact grams of alcohol, calorie content and possible health risks will be listed. The new law was recently signed by Irish Health Minister Stephen Donnelly (47), but will not come into effect for three years.

New regulations aim to improve knowledge

As the BBC reports, labels on alcoholic beverages in Ireland should now not only state the risks of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, but also warn of the risk of cancer or liver disease.

The Irish Government wants other countries to do the same. As with other beverages and foods, it is about making consumers better informed about the risks involved when purchasing alcoholic beverages.
