Australian Police: One of the largest heroin smugglers got into a shootout between Taliban and Iranian border guards

The police have recently arrested one of the allegedly largest heroin smugglers. After his deportation from Turkey, the Australian was arrested on Saturday at the airport in the southeastern Australian metropolis of Sydney, the Australian federal police reported on Sunday. The suspect is said to have been stationed in various countries since March 2020 and organized the smuggling of nearly 348 kilograms of heroin from Thailand to Sydney in December 2020.

Police believe the man has “extensive connections” to transnational organized crime groups, the statement said. Turkish authorities first arrested him in January.

Police Chief Richard Chin praised the work of the authorities and cooperation with Turkey. “Illegal drugs such as heroin are causing significant harm to the Australian community,” he said. “They are a burden on our healthcare system and negatively impact every aspect of society.” (saw/sda/dpa)
